Exam pattern
First Stage CBT (CBT-1)
Common to every notified post at both levels. Screening in nature — the normalised score is used only to shortlist for CBT-2. Duration is 120 minutes for candidates eligible to use a scribe. Minimum percentage for eligibility: UR 40%, EWS 40%, OBC (non-creamy layer) 30%, SC 30%, ST 25%; relaxable by 2 marks for PwBD candidates where posts reserved for them would otherwise go unfilled. The CEN states the section-wise split is only indicative and the actual paper may vary.
Second Stage CBT (CBT-2)
Candidates are shortlisted at 15 times the community-wise vacancies notified against the RRB, on normalised CBT-1 marks. Duration is 120 minutes for candidates eligible to use a scribe. Minimum percentage for eligibility: UR 40%, EWS 40%, OBC (non-creamy layer) 30%, SC 30%, ST 25%. Marks are normalised whenever the CBT runs in multiple sessions on the same syllabus. The section-wise split is again stated to be only indicative.
Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)
Graduate level only, and only for candidates who opted for Station Master or Traffic Assistant. Shortlisting is at 8 times the community-wise vacancies on CBT-2 performance. A minimum T-Score of 42 is needed in EACH test battery, with no relaxation for any category. There is no negative marking. Questions and options are in English and Hindi only. A Vision Certificate in the prescribed format must be produced in original at the test. The merit list is drawn with 70% weightage on CBT-2 and 30% on CBAT. Question patterns are published by RDSO (Psycho Technical Directorate — Guidelines for Aptitude Test).
Computer Based Typing Skill Test (CBTST)
Qualifying only — its marks are not added to the merit. Applies to Senior Clerk cum Typist and Junior Account Assistant cum Typist at Graduate level, and Accounts Clerk cum Typist and Junior Clerk cum Typist at Under Graduate level. Candidates are called at 8 times the community-wise vacancies. Required speed is 30 words per minute in English or 25 in Hindi, on a personal computer, without editing tools or spell check. Kruti Dev and Mangal fonts are provided for Hindi. Candidates permanently disabled by blindness or low vision, cerebral palsy or locomotor disability of not less than 40% may be exempted on producing the prescribed certificate.
Document Verification and Medical Examination
Held for every notified post. Candidates are called for document verification at 1:1 against vacancies. Minimum qualifying marks are 40% for UR and EWS, 30% for OBC (non-creamy layer) and SC, and 25% for ST, with 2 marks relaxation for PwBD candidates where sufficient candidates are not available. Ties are broken by age, the older candidate ranking higher, and by alphabetical order of name if ages are equal.
