Three hours without any break between the papers. Both sections are objective, multiple choice, and all questions are compulsory. Where a question is found incorrect or ambiguous, credit goes only to candidates who attempted it and chose one of the correct answers. The medium is English and Hindi only, except for language papers.

Paper I · Teaching and Research Aptitude

Assesses teaching and research aptitude — primarily reasoning ability, reading comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness.

Paper II · Subject paper

Based on the subject selected by the candidate, assessing domain knowledge. Subject codes are listed in Appendix-II of the bulletin, and the per-subject syllabi are published by the UGC at ugcnetonline.in; the NTA does not issue syllabus copies to candidates.
